  3. When to take the shots.
  4. Taking lighting into consideration before taking the shots.
  5. Using different angles.
  6. How to set up the camera and the tripod.
  7. How to track and run with a video camera.
  8. How to understand and view the composition from filming the shots.
  9. Learning when to play and pause the filming.
  10. How to hold and manoeuvre with the video camera in the hand.
  11. How to zoom in and out of objects.
  12. How to make the camera focus on the object.
  13. Focusing on the distance of the object, for a more in depth visual image. (aperture)
  14. Learning how to hold and position the camera in the hand.
  15. Learning how to keep steady when filming different shots at tight angles and also at narrow spaces.

MY PITCH ON OUR FOUND FOOTAGE HORROR OPENING SEQUENCE.

My pitch is that there are 2 British vloggers / paranormal enthusiasts, who are in Los Angeles to visit a haunted place, called "THE FAMOUS ESPERO APARTMENT". There is a news reporter who is working with BBC WORLD, who will be sharing the news out to the audience about the situation of the 2 girls. All of this information is shared out to the world before the actual footage has taken place. This will depict an image of the past and the present, therefore creating an atmosphere of amazement and irony. Also, high and low angle shots will be made when doing the hand held vlogging shots for the horror opening sequence.

MY OWN INITIAL IDEA SUBMITTED TO THE GROUP BLOG FOR CONSIDERATION OF THE STORYBOARD.

The idea I had put forward for the storyboard was the glitch interruptions of the news reporter, whilst the 2 vloggers were vlogging their journey. In the storyboard, I had asked the group if I could have 6 key appearances in the opening sequence.
They said yes.
However, this was changed later on, as we began editing our opening sequence on the iMac. My 6 appearances had changed to 5 appearances, and all of these shots were shown before the 2 vloggers had opened the door to the haunted room.
This was advice from our media teachers that we should not show abrupt shots of the news reporter, when the 2 vloggers are in the middle of exploring the haunted apartment.
We had taken this information on board, and had adhered by it.

My contributions were the where, when and how my news reporting scenes / shots should show up in our "FOUND FOOTAGE" / "THE FOOTAGE" horror opening sequence.

MY INDIVIDUAL RESPONSE TO PLANNING MEETINGS / EDITING PROCESS.

I believe that I was the active force of the group, in order to get things done. I had tried my utmost best to arrange meetings with the group, and had also sometimes failed and succeeded in doing this.

When I had been able to plan meetings, we went through what steps we needed to go over next. I had been talking about who should complete and start the editing and filming process, and also the entire
structure in general. I had been planning a formal meeting during lunch times once a week and also an informal meeting during 2 break times per week. This had enabled us to deliberate and catch up with things that needed to be done. This was a vital step for our opening sequence to be successful.

For the editing process, we had taken turns and had rotated the roles. Anam and Alex had mainly been doing the editing of the opening sequence. However, I also had 10 minutes of editing the scenes, after Alex, Anam and YouTube tutorials had taught me how to edit on Adobe Premiere Pro. I helped edit the vlogging scenes, but mainly the news reporting scenes. Editing was an ongoing process, as we kept making adjustments to our opening sequence everyday.

MY PERSONAL RESPONSE TO THE BRIEF.

My personal response is that the overall procedure of the making of the opening sequence was quite good. Although we had had a few setbacks, I would say that the ongoing development and completion of the task went well, and that being said, it was finished to a very high standard. We had learnt and used many techniques which we never even imagined of doing so.

To conclude, my main response would be that the complete package of myself and the rest of the group finishing the task was really beneficial, as we had learnt as we went on further into researching on what we had to do.

I had a great experience when doing this task, and I really ejoyed many aspects of it.

MY INDIVIDUAL RESPONSE TO THE IDEA / THOUGHTS ABOUT THE GROUP CHOICE.

Personally, I feel that the thought of filming an opening sequence of the "FOUND FOOTAGE" sub-genre of horror was a great idea. I saw this as an opportunity to boost the image of this type of sub-genre, as it is not a popular sub-genre.
This was a very smart and vital choice that the group had made, because it was our chance to be unique from the rest of the class, who were doing typical sub-genres of horror, using villains and blood etc. Though these might be the face of horror in general, the Found Footage sub-genre is more interesting. In EVERY horror film, a tripod is used. However, the majority of Found Footage films are filmed using a video camera, and that being controlled by hand as well, giving the person holding the camera freedom. Using a tripod is limited, and using a handheld camera is limitless in terms of rules.

Also, I had contributed an idea to my group that there should be more shots of "THE FAMOUS ESPERO APARTMENT", rather than myself as the news reporter. This is the exact feedback our media teachers had given to us. I had also recommended when my shots should be suitable in our opening sequence, and when they should appear.

Overall, I would say that I felt confident with what the group chose to film upon, as we all had the same approach and feelings towards it. The Found Footage film we had done allows us to think outside the box and be creative. This is my most favourite sub-genre of horror and I feel that the group had made an excellent decision on what topic we should be filming on. I believe that this was the correct step that the group had taken.

ABOUT FOUND FOOTAGE.

"FOUND FOOTAGE" is one of the sub-genres for horror. It usually revolves around a a missing tape from a very long time ago. The footage that is found, is usually the last records and evidence of the catastrophic events that had taken place beforehand. The people who had filmed that footage, are usually missing or dead.

Found Footage films have a huge advantage over many other horror films. One of the main reasons is freedom.
In Found Footage films, you have the ability to control the camera, and can take the audience with you on a mind blowing journey. Films that are not found footage, are limited to where the tripod takes them, and can not move in any desired direction.

CLOVERFIELD.
In "CLOVERFIELD", the first 2 minutes of the opening sequence, the production logo is shown, therefore telling the audience who had produced the film. We are not immediately introduced to the main character, but are looking at the POV of the "could be" main character. His face is not shown, but a part of a narrative is shown. The man may be hiding his identity, in order to reveal it later on in the beginning of the film. The man shows the audience an even further insight to what he can see. We see something very iconic that indicates where he is. The New York skyline is where he is looking at, probably indicating that he wants to do some damage. The lighting is quite dark and the use of the location, sets the scene as we now know where he is. We do not know why, but from the dark lighting and his camera angle, we can infer that his intentions do not look very bright.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY.
Another example would be 'PARANORMAL ACTIVITY". In this film, the camera is quite shaky and wobbly at the beginning. Despite the fact that it does NOT look professional on screen, it may add to the realism and the feeling of being scared and nervous. I felt that the person holding the camera, needs to learn how to caress and guide the camera, rather than being inconsistent and tired. The beginning of these opening sequence are quite slow paced, as the character may still be getting used to the camera and trying to adjust it as well.

REC.
In the first 2 minutes of "REC", the production company's logo is presented. This appears in a glitchy effect, again, reminding the audience how this has aspects of "FOUND FOOTAGE". The glicth effect has a different meaning. A glitch is mainly viewed as a negative feauture, and is often seen as a distruption, which portrays an image of violence and an unsettling situation in the upcoming scenes of the film. Later on in the opening scene, we are introduced to a female presenter, who is in charge of an eveing show. She is holding a microphone, and is talking in a very professional manner.

After the setting of the scene, we are introduced to the main character of the film, who will lead the story of the film onwards and guide us through what is going on. The main character was the last person in the 2 minute opening scene, which is an indication to the audience that this character is BIG, and will want us to follow and embark on a journey with that character. There is Juxtaposition between the presenter's jolly attitude, in comparison to the dull and low key lighting. This signifies how expectation versus reality can be seen between 2 aspects in a scene. The low level lighting also connotes how the evening is damaged and broken down.

In horror films, low level lighting is a must, just to create effect, build up of tension and also to make the audience feel uncomfortable and out oftheir comfort zone.

MISE EN SCENE:
  1. The camera shows how close ups, POV shots and low and high angle shots can be used. The POV shot shows the audience what YOU are looking at with your own eyes. Also, the close up emphasise facial expressions whilst the low and high angle shots concentrate on the level of power or timidness.
  2. The sound is a mix of diegetic and non - diegetic. Whispering, creaking floor boards, screams, phone ringing, spine chilling high and low pitch music, rustling, wind, shouting, demons communicating with each other in their own language,
  3. The lighting is mainly low - key. In horror films, black is the most dominant colour because of it's pure nature. irregular shadows forming and pitch, dull atmosphere signifies death and/or danger. The absence of light puts the audience into shock and in constant awareness of their surroundings.
  4. For editing, shot reverse shots are used between the hero and the villain. Fast pace cuts are used to build action and tension.
NARRATIVE:
  1. The story and tempo of horror films are quite slow, so that suspense can gradually build up over time, causing a more eager and curious approach from the audience.
  2. Sometimes there are fast paced scenes to establish the relationship between the hero and the villain. They both fight directly and indirectly, eventually making one of them die ardor the other dying straight after.

FILM NAME: "THE FOOTAGE".

This is our script, which was made by Anam mainly, then Alex, then myself when I had joined the group.

As a group, we had decided to come together and choose to do an opening sequence on "FOUND FOOTAGE" of  horror. This was simply because w were inspired by "THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT", and also because it is a topic which is not heavily looked upon. It is an unpopular genre of horror, so as a group we all had the same aim to revive it. Also, we wanted to be unique and different from the rest of the class. We wanted to be the outcast, so that our class look at and appreciate us on our approach to this sub - genre of horror that no other group in the class has chosen to do.

The two girls vlog their journey to the "FAMOUS ESPERO APARTMENT", and then have a short disagreement with one another, about going inside. They were on a mission to find out about the Theresa Thaw's case and jus to explore in general, as they are paranormal enthusiasts. Just a while after they going, Sandra Park goes missing, and then Julia Rose begins to panic. Jump cuts will be made during the editing process, but also in the final outcome, as a view of past and present needs to be shown. The 2 bloggers will introduce themselves, once the news reporter has said his part about them. Julia Rose tries to make a phone call to the police, (911)but can not, due to her not being able to find her own phone. Both of the girls disappear, and the camera drops as a result of this. "THE FOOTAGE" appears.

This script was altered we continued to film.

The areas of concern were, the film looking like a trailer due to the jump cuts. Also, the cutting technique. This is mainly because the cuts need to be precise and accurate.

The 2 minute mark is absolutely comfortable. Going over would mean that the opening sequence is revealing too much information.

Overall, we felt that the script was very good, and the LESS use of the news reporter, means that the entire opening sequence can be full of suspense and fearfulness.

MOOD BOARD.

This is the mood board which Alex had created.

It describes how "The Blair Witch Project" poster is our main theme and how the young students were filming a documentary for their school project. This film includes "FOUND FOOTAGE" scenes.

It shows a video camera, which will be used for the blogging scenes of Julia Rose and Sandra Park. The video camera is a piece of equipment and not really a prop.

Alex and Anam will wear wear dated clothing, as this film was set in the year 2008, (9 years from now) The simple clothing will portray the image of what it was like at that moment of time.

The location is the Espero Studios, which on Brick Lane at Westminster.

The Breaking News will have it's own segment in the opening sequence ... Blue and Red themed.

"THE FOOTAGE", is the name of our opening sequence / film.

STORY BOARD.

This is the story board which Anam had created. It describes the storyline section by section. This bitesize breaking down chunking method for the storyline, shows how easy it is to understand this, and also what our aim is.
This was very accurate as we were able to follow it correctly. (WE DID MAKE A FEW ALTERATIONS TO THE ACTUAL OPENING SEQUENCE)

FEEDBACK OF OUR OPENING SEQUENCE FROM OUR CLASS, 2 MEDIA TEACHERS, AND OUR TARGET AUDIENCE.

We got positive feedback, and that was the main success. understood the camera shots, location and the lighting as well.
There were however, areas for improvement.
These consist of ...
  1. Not adding any music into the background for effect.
  2. Not adding any credits at the beginning or end of the opening sequence.
  3. Putting the volume of the glitch effect too high
We had taken all of this into account, and it is all sorted and adjusted.
Also, the idea was to mix British people into the American society. We were not trying to replicate the American citizens, but had clearly stated that there were 2 British enthusiasts, visiting a place in LA. ...
(LATER ON IN THE OPENING SEQUENCE)
Two British Vloggers presumed dead in LA.

OUR TARGET AUDIENCE SAID...

  • It was quite good. (15 and 16 year olds)
  • It was quite good, but looked like a trailer. (17 year olds)
  • It was good but credits and music needs to be added on. Also, there was not enough suspicion and fear. This was coming from a year 13 media student, so we were really grateful that we got this advice given to us.

OUR 2 MEDIA TEACHERS SAID...

  • Add more footage of the vloggers.
  • Fix the production title because it is too bright.
  • Show less of the news presenter, and more of the 2 vloggers, because the presenter is eliminating the suspicion and fear.
  • Fix and re-adjust the scaling so that the balcony can not be seen.
  • Make sure that the lighting continues to get darker as your step into the apartment room.
  • The film reminds them a little bit of a trailer.
We have definitely taken on board all these constructive criticism improvements, and have already finished our entire opening sequence. All of the feedback was very helpful because it helped us realise our strengths and weaknesses. Also, the opening sequence looks much better now, as all the improvements have been made.

We are very grateful for all the advice that has been given to us.

TARGET AUDIENCE FOR OUR OPENING SEQUENCE.

We have interviewed three 15 year olds, three 16 year olds and three 17 year olds. The reason why we have chosen to interview 9 people in total, is because we want a huge range of opinions. We interviewed males and females, both genders coming from a different background. This ensures that we achieve a different set of results, as the people will each have their own way of interpreting and answering questions. Our target audience is 15 +, hence why we chose 2 ages above.

We would have liked to record our interviews, rather than show a questionnaire on a sheet of paper, but unfortunately we did not have enough time to do this. (TIME MANAGEMENT AND WORK RATE NEEDS TO IMPROVE)

Overall, the feedback was quite positive and helpful. People who ARE and are NOT interested in horror, both enjoyed ur opening sequence.
Some of the requests were to make sure that the opening sequence looks real, and stick to it's naturality. Also, some would have liked us to reveal the identity of the "so called villain", but we felt that we will not reveal who or what it is, because we would like the audience to decide and make their predictions / presumptions. We want their views.
What we did take on board was the natural and realistic view of the opening sequence.
Our questionnaire really gave us a confident boost as well as working on the areas for improvements, and we felt that we would only take the advice to make the opening sequence look real. We felt that everything else was done to the best of our abilities. However, at the end of the day, it matters about what the audience have to say, and how we can listen to and do what their good suggestions tell us to. The feedback we received was quite helpful.

The sole purpose of having the credits in a film is to give credit and highlight the key roles of the individuals who have played a role in the making of he film.

This is an extremely famous director who has directed Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and also the Dark Knight Rises.
The credits need to be BOLD so that it is clear to the audience, who is responsible for what.

Theere are many roles to consider for the credits. The Producers, Directors and the main Starring actors of the film are the most important roles in the cast. They are the big names.
The costume designer, editer, music and soundtrack composed by... (These are individual tasks and also deserve huge credits)

THIS IS THE CHRONOLOGICAL AND THE COMMON ORDER OF THE FILM CREDITS.

Each role in the credits is important, and the aim is to show the effort, ability and hard work that has gone into the making of the film.

RESEARCH INTO FILM INSTITUTIONS.

                                                  THE WORKING TITLE

The working title do not make blockbuster films but instead make small individual films.
It was founded in 1984 by Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner. This company is now the most successful British film production company. The first working title film they had started to film was “The Man Who Shot Christmas. (In the year 1984) This led to their first film for Channel Four and the first of many landmark Working Title Films. - “My Beautiful Laundrette”. This film had made 400,000 USD and had taken over 2.5 million USD. The Working Title want to make European films for a worldwide audience. They want to inspire them with the international ideas and influences and they could not undergo their journey, without the backing of a major Hollywood studio. The 2004 Universal became part of the National Broadcasting Company, which enables greater access to finance. The increase in distribution leads to diversifying slate, which means that after the release of small films, a larger film is then released straight after, in order to provide support to the smaller films. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Elizabeth (2011) are smaller films in comparison to franchiseable films such as Bridget Jones.

35 million USD is the amount of money the Working Title can spend on a film before consulting with universal. The Working Title have a lot of freedom to make creative decisions but it is owned by a conglomerate. 13 million GBP was the budget for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and this particular films had taken in 9.8 GBP from the UK Box Office takings. However, the protection of Universal means that the Working Title was able to survive this low standard and disappointing performance. The film, Bean (In the year 1996) had a budget of 16.2 million GBP and had bagged / earned 17.9 million GBP in the UK Box Office. However, Bridget Jones (In the year of 2000) had taken 42 million GBP from the UK Box Office. This was the highest earning within the UK Box Office for the most key Working Title films. Bridget Jones had made a profit of 28 million GBP.

The Working Title produce around 6 or 7 films per year, alongside only 1 number of “risk free films”.  They invest in 2 mainstream films per year and the good thing about them is that they will invest in projects that they feel heavily passionate about, regardless of if they include risks. To this day, the Working Title has made 95 films and have cashed in 4.5 billion USD by the making of their films. Elizabeth, Dead Man Walking, Johnny English and the Bean, are just a few of the main noticeable films the Working Title have produced.

Eric Fellner has stated that the Working Title focuses on character and narrative, rather than special effects and actions. They mainly create films of cross-genres. Eric Fellner feels that the simple essence of a successful film is a really good screenplay and sense of humanity; that the most important thing is for the audience to identify and empathise with characters. Working Title have aimed to create an industry that is exportable and global. Fellner states that there is an active aggressive industry in Hollywood, that they are not able to compete with. However, his aim to put the companies focus on making good films they truly believe in, then exporting them. He also believes that the notion of the British Film Industry should also focus on being purely British, with no interference. He would prefer to work with the home grown material and work with others, in order to distribute their product in the market. Fellner says that the British film industry is “thriving” and also have the ability to ride out recessions. However, Fellner also pays a huge interest in in characters being fun, engaging and interesting. He wants the audience to feel a connection with the characters, that they would want to spend time with them, regardless of if they are stereotypical or simplistic. The Working Title focuses on on characters etc instead of packaging films + characters for the American audience.
In order to grab the audience’s attention, the Working Title also focuses on locations, narrative, themes and genre.
Their films have grossed more than 1.2 million GBP since 1984.
The Working Title Movie Template consists of British Film + American star = $$$$$$
This appeals to international market and is a great success for the British Film Industry. Also, The Working Title want to make European films for a worldwide audience. In the year 1998, Polygram bought by Universal (a Hollywood Studio itself) is owned by Seagram. The financial stability offered by the support from a major studio allowed The Working Title to move rapidly on the international stage. The Working Title has a really small structure and employs just 42 full time staff, which is split between the main Working Title production arm. The most important and crucial par of the business is developing key scripts. The Working Title has a strong development team and invests heavily in making sure that they get it right. No errors are to be seen. Approximately, 40 to 50 projects are in development and every script costs around 250,000 USD to 500,000 USD. The Working Title aim to make around 5 to 10 films a year and have an average budget size ranging from 30 to 40 million USD. Universal Pictures and The Working Title Films have extended their production agreement for an extra five years. Bridget Jone’s Baby is the first uk film industry to make 1 Billion GBP return in the UK.

The casting of The Working Title is quite simple. It gains audience by using American film stars.

Universal Studios helps distribute their films across many different international platforms. Bridget Jones Baby had been distributed to Canada, France, United Kingdom and also North America. Bridget Jones baby had made 212 USD through the entire box office worldwode. This includes 60 million GBP in the United Kingdom, and also 24.1 million USD in Canad and the United States of America.
The Working Title create films with cross - genres, which means that they have a wider audience. This would be a mix between comedy and romance.

Hilary Bevan is the co producer, and the importance of the script is VERY important.
The script covers the costs in the budget, the major and minor roles for the cast, the location and also what type of set needs to be built.

BRIDGET JONES BABY.

This is the first British film to make 1 billion GBP / USD at the UK box office.
It's very first trailer had appeared on the Ellen show and had gained 3.9million views per episode.
Their website includes trailers, a synopsis of the film, working with high standard brands such as muller, the yoghurt company and they also have 3 main media platforms for the audience to interact with. These are Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Also, Muller is part of their synergistic campaign. The yoghurt company can help promote their film, theorefore gaining more viewers and more money. The consumers could win a Luxurious London Break by purchasing the yoghurts which have the on pack promotions. However, Jurassic Park had worked with higher brands such as Mercedes and Lego. This was on an international scale.

THE WAYS THE WORKING TITLE USE THEIR MARKETING TECHNIQUES.

They focus on their target audience, and also release teaser trailers in many cinemas. This would gather a wider audience. They have a Unique Selling Point, whereby they are prepared ahead of the game, and very early. Awareness of the film has to be built up early, in order for the maximum views and interests the film receives.

They use Radio and TV to advertise their products via interviews, gossips, live calls and also crew actions. Small clips would also be used just for the build up of excitement.

Posters are also used so that their film can be advertised in many locations, therefore bringing in a wider audience. Whilst cars are at the traffic light, they could take a look at whats on offer, and if it appeals to them, they could spread the message across.

CONVERGENCE.

This covers a wide range, whereby there are many platforms the audience are able to view the product. Jurassic World offers the film to be watched on Netflix, stream accounts, mobile phones and also the trailer ready for download on their own app. The main idea is that technologies are working together whereby iTunes, Google Play, MP3 files on mobile phones are all an available opetion to have a relation with the film.

EXTREME DIGITAL CHANGES TO CINEMA.

Building expensive sets are an old technique now. The green screen is the future for all film makers, because your imagination could be unleashed easily. The green screen ensures that anything can be put on the screen, making it look as realistic as ever. Also, VERY expensive cameras enable fluent, clean and crisp footage, allowing the entire film to run smoothly. Also, transitioning between different types of cinemas has lowered the cost of the distribution of the film. A range of 2000 GBP and 3000 GBP cane be saved per motion picture.

DIGITAL DISTRIBUTION.

The crackdown on security and overall controls are now enhanced. The company are able to take charge of this. They make the film available in numerous ways, allowing it to be showed across many platforms. Piracy is one of teh main reasons why a huge film would lose over 400 million a year. To put an end to piracy, more platforms have opened, allowing the decrease of cheap low quality products being sold. A wider oficial range would mean that piracy would largely decrease and would also discourage it. In a 2D cinema, it would be easier to film the entire movie as the pixels are not doubled up. However, in 3D cinemas, it would be a lot harder to record full movies as the pixels ARE doubled up and also because of the digitalisation technique where the films images could be manipulated and seen differently using any camera.

THE INBETWEENERS.

This film had a budget of 3.5 million GBP, and had also earned over 2.5 million GBP in 409 cinemas on the first day it had been released. It had earnt a total amount of 13.22 million GBP and was also distributed by Entertainment Film Distributors.
It was released on the normal CD and also on Blu-Ray. It included extra bonus footage for the audience and this includes footage that was NOT shown in cinema. This enables the audience to learn and enjoy more of the product. In the first day of the fims release, they had sold around 575,000 copies of the film.

The marketing aspect of the E4 Sitcom film was amazing. Merchandise such as shirts and mugs were being sold. The shirts could be worn outside, and people who go to work could take their own cup, advertising the movie at the same time. There were many other merchandising products as well. (synergy)

Trailers, Soundtracks and renting were all available online. As usual, social media platforms play a huge part in the films progress as well. Facebook was used to upload pages which were only related to the film. This was really accessible people who have or dont have Facebook can view the page and obtain all the key information they need. This is cross media and this would definitely increase the publicity of the film as hundreds of thousands and millions of users are online everyday.

HONEYTRAP.

This film is a low budget film and is based around a young individual, comitting one of the most heinous crimes... MURDER!
The films budget was under 1 million GBP, and has used events such as crowdfunding, so that peopel could pay forward a few punds to help the film progress.
